In a stunning upset at the 2025 Australian Open, unseeded American Alex Michelsen defeated former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, marking the first major shock of the tournament.

Michelsen’s Big Win

Michelsen, ranked World No. 42, claimed victory in 2 hours and 43 minutes, registering a career-high win over the 2023 finalist. The 20-year-old American hit 46 winners and displayed an aggressive and fearless game with powerful serving and booming groundstrokes. This was Michelsen's first win over a top-20 opponent at a Grand Slam.

Michelsen's Reflections

After the match, Michelsen reflected on his performance:

“I just tried to stay super composed out there... I knew it was going to be a battle in the end. The serve sort of let me down a little in the fourth (set) but I’m super happy I could get through it. But it was all about the mindset. I came in with the proper mindset and executed the game plan.”

Tsitsipas' Struggles

This loss extends Tsitsipas’ recent struggles in Grand Slams. After his strong performances in the 2019, 2021, and 2022 Australian Opens, where he reached the semifinals, Tsitsipas has faced a downturn. He has not advanced beyond the second round in his past three majors, including being eliminated in the second round at Wimbledon and the first round of the US Open last year.

Michelsen’s Next Opponent

Michelsen now advances to the second round, where he will face either Australian wildcard James McCabe or Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce. With this victory, he will move up to a career-high No. 41 in the ATP rankings.
