Hydrogen-Fuelled Buses to Operate on Bhubaneswar-Konark-Puri Route Under National Green Hydrogen Mission

The Bhubaneswar-Konark-Puri corridor is set to embrace green mobility with the introduction of hydrogen-fuelled buses under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This initiative, part of the Government of India's larger push toward sustainable transport, includes five pilot projects aimed at integrating hydrogen-powered buses and trucks into mainstream transportation. The move is expected to cut carbon emissions and promote clean energy solutions.

Government’s Push for Hydrogen-Based Transport

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved five pilot projects, selecting routes, vehicles, and hydrogen refuelling stations for testing. A total of 37 vehicles have been sanctioned, including:

  • 15 hydrogen fuel cell-based buses and trucks
  • 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles

To support these operations, nine hydrogen refuelling stations will be set up across India.

Hydrogen-Fuelled Vehicles to Operate on 10 Key Routes

Hydrogen-powered buses and trucks will be deployed on ten strategic routes across the country:

  1. Bhubaneswar-Konark-Puri
  2. Greater Noida-Delhi-Agra
  3. Ahmedabad-Vadodara-Surat
  4. Sahibabad-Faridabad-Delhi
  5. Pune-Mumbai
  6. Jamshedpur-Kalinga Nagar
  7. Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi
  8. Kochi-Edappally
  9. Jamnagar-Ahmedabad
  10. NH-16 Visakhapatnam-Bayyavaram

Major Companies Leading the Hydrogen Transition

The pilot projects will be implemented by top industry leaders, including:

  • TATA Motors Ltd
  • Reliance Industries Limited
  • NTPC
  • ANERT
  • Ashok Leyland
  • HPCL, BPCL, IOCL

The Government of India has allocated ₹208 crore to fund these projects, which are expected to be operational within 18-24 months.

National Green Hydrogen Mission: A Step Toward a Sustainable Future

The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to introduce hydrogen as a clean fuel for buses and trucks in a phased manner. These pilot projects are designed to:

Demonstrate the safe and efficient use of hydrogen vehicles.
Assess their technical feasibility and performance.
Evaluate their economic viability for large-scale deployment.

If successful, these initiatives will accelerate India’s transition to clean energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and cutting down on emissions.
