Cannes 2024: ‘Joyguru’ Becomes One of A Kind Collaboration

“Joyguru” is an exciting international collaboration that promises to captivate audiences worldwide. This cinematic masterpiece brings together talents from India, the USA, the UK, and France, creating a kaleidoscope of cultures and narratives. Ace Indian cinematographer Ravi Verman will lend his expertise to the project, set to commence principal photography in 2025. At the heart of “Joyguru” lies a celebration of cultural heritage and artistic expression, with the film shining a spotlight on the timeless wisdom of the Baul tradition. The remarkable journey of Parvathy Baul, a beacon of inspiration in the Baul path, will serve as the film’s guiding light, enriching souls across continents.

“Joyguru,” a captivating film, is the result of a collaborative effort between California-based producers Aniruddha and Aparna Dasgupta, pioneers in distributing South Asian cinema in North America and Canada, and Soumyajit Majumdar’s LOK Arts Collective from India and the UK. This cinematic endeavor aims to unveil the profound essence of the Baul tradition by chronicling the intriguing life story of Parvathy Baul. Complemented by co-producers Munsur Ali, the Chairman of the London City Corporation’s Culture and Heritage, and Founder-Director of Moringa Studios, as well as Paris-based Chayan Sarkar, Ambassador of the city of Toulouse, France, “Joyguru” promises to transcend mere entertainment, becoming a transformative cinematic experience.

Soumyajit Majumder added, “This is not only a film, this is my prayer. It’s been almost two years that I have been researching this film. Baul is a global phenomenon, however, in India Baul is misrepresented and often identified only as folk music. Parvathy Ji’s life is testimony to the fact that the spiritual power of Baul can transform lives. The film is based on her life journey but this won’t be a biopic (sic).”

About Joyguru

“Joyguru,” a new player in the Indian film industry, is set to make its mark at the 2024 Cannes Film Market. Embracing the universal language of Baul music and philosophy, this journey aims to bridge the gap between nations and cultures, introducing the world to the captivating magic of this traditional art form. From Kolkata to Cannes, this pursuit of harmony and unity resonates with a global audience seeking deeper connections and enlightenment.
