Mumbai Faces Heavy Rain Ahead: IMD issues yellow alert

Mumbai experienced moderate rainfall on Monday morning after a prolonged dry spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city and surrounding districts due to expected heavy rain through Wednesday.

Moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning, are anticipated throughout the week. Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are under a yellow alert until Friday, with an orange alert set for Thane and Palghar on Wednesday due to the potential for extremely heavy rain in certain areas.

Between Sunday and Monday mornings, the Santacruz observatory recorded 17 mm of rain, while the Colaba coastal station noted 24 mm, as reported by the IMD. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Mumbai on Monday, with additional rain forecasted for isolated areas from Tuesday to Wednesday. As September progresses, rainfall intensity is expected to increase. So far, the city has received only 190 mm of rain, well below the average of 360 mm for this time of year. Since the monsoon began in June, the Santacruz station has recorded a total of 2,622.5 mm of rainfall.

As of Monday morning, the water stock in the seven lakes supplying the city with drinking water reached 97.96%, amounting to 14.17 lakh million liters of total capacity. This marks a slight decrease in water stock compared to over 98% on the same date in 2022 and 2023, attributed to the recent light rainfall.
