Kerala Monsoon: Red alert issued, emergency operations activated | Check forecast

New Delhi: As torrential rains continue to batter Kerala, the state government has sprung into action, activating emergency operation centres across all districts and taluk offices. With a red alert in place for four districts – Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha – forecasting extremely heavy rainfall until May 21, authorities are taking stringent measures to ensure public safety.

“The Disaster Management Authority has warned of potential mudslides on roads,” said Revenue Minister K Rajan, emphasising the need for strict regulations in hilly areas to mitigate landslide risks. Safety boards will be installed to warn travellers, and district collectors have been empowered to impose night travel bans in vulnerable areas if necessary.

“The 24×7 Emergency Operation Centres have been opened in all collectorates and taluk offices with the coordination of various departments to tackle all urgent situations,” the revenue minister said.

Meanwhile, the state is already experiencing the impacts of the heavy downpour, with intense waterlogging, uprooted trees, and snapped electric wires reported across the state. Health Minister Veena George has issued a warning to all districts about the possibility of epidemics arising from the heavy rains, urging hospitals to prepare for potential outbreaks. “Many epidemics are likely to occur due to climate change. Hospitals have been alerted. Instructions have already been given to ensure availability of medicines,” she said in a statement.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts, highlighting the widespread nature of the heavy rains. As the monsoon fury continues, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) urges people to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize risks.
