Uttarakhand: High Court directs to find new name for Ranikhet disease, says it negatively impacts Hill Town

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand high court has given a directive to find a suitable name for a disease which includes the name of a picturesque hill town and a famous tourist spot Ranikhet in the state. This decision came into light after a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by a resident of this town which says that it negatively impacts the reputation of town and tourism as well.

Negative Impact on Tourism

In a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Satish Joshi, a resident of Ranikhet, it was said that the name “Ranikhet disease” negatively impacts the hill station’s reputation. Additionally, the disease’s name has led to concerns about tourism and Ranikhet’s image as a serene and beautiful destination. During the hearing, chief justice Ritu Bahari and justice Rakesh Thapliyal acknowledged that the picturesque town’s allure is overshadowed by its association with this avian disease.

HC has directed to find an alternative name

Responding to this PIL, the Uttarakhand high court has directed the state government to propose an alternative name for the disease. To dissociate the disease from the town’s name and enhance Ranikhet’s positive image, the court has given this verdict. Furthermore, the administration has been given until June 27 to file an affidavit suggesting a new name for the illness.

Ranikhet disease is an avian disease

Ranikhet disease, also known as Newcastle disease, primarily affects birds and poultry. It leads to respiratory issues, nervous system problems, and high mortality rates among infected birds. The disease is caused by a paramyxovirus and can spread rapidly within bird populations.

Ranikhet is a well-known tourist destination

Ranikhet, nestled approximately 50 km from Almora in Uttarakhand, stands as a captivating tourist destination. Ranikhet boasts a healthy climate and fresh breeze, cool mountain air, fragrant with the scent of pine and deodar trees, which rejuvenates visitors. The town offers panoramic vistas of the Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Kot. Sunrise and sunset views from Ranikhet are truly awe-inspiring and pollution-free greenery allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature’s tranquility. Ranikhet is home to the Kumaon Regimental Centre, a significant military establishment. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a round of golf at the Ranikhet Golf Course, set amidst picturesque surroundings. The town’s narrow lanes, lined with old houses, exude a quaint charm that transports visitors to a bygone era.
