Swati Maliwal assault case: Why Delhi Police is questioning Arvind Kejriwal’s parents today

New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal has revealed that the police will come to question his ailing parents on Thursday in connection with the alleged assault of Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal who has accused his close aide Bibhav Kumar of thrashing her inside the Delhi chief minister’s residence in the national capital.

“Tomorrow, Delhi Police will come to interrogate my old and ailing parents,” he said in a post in Hindi on X.

Why Kejriwal’s parents will be questioned

Sources say the questioning comes after Maliwal revealed to the police that first went inside the rooms of Kerjiwal’s residence and saw his parents and wife Sunita Kejriwal having breakfast on May 13, the of the alleged assault, and then came back to the living area and waited to meet the chief minister.

Buzz grew around the questioning with speculations that something substantial could be revealed in the case, further explaining the events of the incident which has put Maliwal, the former chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party against each other. Delhi ministers Gopal Rai and Saurabh Bharadwaj arrived at Kejriwal’s residence ahead of the questioning but stayed silent to media queries.

The party has denied the allegations of assault by Bibhav Kumar and claimed that Maliwal has been blackmailed to level the charges by the BJP with a case over illegal recruitment in the DCW. Party leaders have also attacked the BJP over the issue, questioning if they thought Kejriwal’s parents were involved in the alleged assault.

AAP MP Maliwal has alleged that she was “assaulted” by Kejriwal’s personal assistant Bibhav Kumar when she went to meet the chief minister on May 13. The police have registered a case and arrested Kumar.
