Bharatpur Case: Odisha Govt Assigns Security to Army Officer and Fiancée After Alleged Police Assault

The Odisha government has taken decisive action by assigning Personal Security Officers (PSOs) for an Army officer and his fiancée following an alleged assault by police personnel at the Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar. The security detail will accompany the couple during their movements within the city, ensuring their safety, as confirmed by an official from the Twin City Commissionerate Police.

The couple has accepted the government-provided security arrangements after the troubling incident on September 15. At around 2 AM, the Army Major and his fiancée visited the police station to lodge a complaint after facing misbehavior from some youths while returning home. However, they were allegedly subjected to harassment and physical assault by the police officers at the station. Disturbingly, the woman further accused the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of attempting to sexually assault her.

In light of these allegations, the Odisha Crime Branch has registered a criminal case against five police personnel, including the former IIC Dinakrushna Mishra, Sub Inspector Baisalini Panda, and other officers involved. The state’s Director General of Police, YB Khurania, had earlier suspended the accused officers, while Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has called for a judicial inquiry into the matter.
